Hell Spawn

Het is een beetje laat bij ons verzeild, want "Shadows of innocence" is eigenlijk al 2 jaar uit. Ze komen wel uit Australië en dit is hun derde album in hun 17jarige bestaan. Met invloeden van Dio, Black Sabbath, Priest en Maiden zit dit drietal vooral in het klassieke eighties metal straatje, maar door de hoge, galmende zang van Jimmy Petkoff (die vaak doet denken aan die van David Taylor, origineel Jacobs Dream vocalist) hangt er ook een US metal sfeertje in dit album. Het is niet slecht wat deze Aussies bieden, alleen is het met 14 nummers (die bijna allemaal over de 5 minuten gaan) wat van het goede teveel. De aandacht verslapt gewoonweg halverwege het album. En daar helpt heus geen (zoveelste) interpretatie van "Heaven and hell" bij! Het wakkert wel mijn nieuwsgierigheid aan naar Petkoff's andere project, een doomiër outfit dat Raven Black Night heet. It came in a bit late, because "Shadows of innocence" is already out for 2 years. But this band is from Australia, it's there third album in their 17 years of existence. With influences coming from Dio, Black Sabbath, Priest and Maiden, this is mainly classic eighties metal, but because of the high pitched, reverberating vocals of Jimmy Petkoff (who often reminds me of David Taylor, original Jacobs Dream frontman) there's also quite an US metal vibe to this album. It's not bad what these Aussies have to offer, it's only too much with 14 songs (almost all clocking over 5 minutes). It doesn't hold your attention all the time. And (again) another interpretation of "Heaven and hell" doesn't actually help. It stirs up my curiosity for Petkoff's other band, a doomier outfit that's called Raven Black Night.
