Ergens begin deze eeuw begonnen onder de naam Minds Eye, wat eigenlijk een cover band was die zich vooral specialiseerde in covers van prog georiënteerde bands als Dream Theater en Rush. Enige jaren later veranderen ze hun naam in Brutal Hand en begonnen ze aan eigen nummers. Ondertussen zijn ze reeds aan hun derde full cd toe (de twee voorgaande werden wel in eigen beheer uitgebracht). Dit is mijn eerste kennismaking met deze Amerikanen en na kennis genomen te hebben van bovenstaande was het toch even schrikken. De techniciteit zit er ongetwijfeld ingebakken, maar muzikaal gaat dit vijftal toch eerder een steviger US metal richting uit. Weliswaar met progressieve inslag in de oude Queensrÿche of Savatage richting. Het zijn de vette riffs van Ed Herrera en het uitstekende vocale werk van Freddy Ferrell die "Purgatory's rage" boven de middelmaat doen uitstijgen, je hoort gewoon dat dit doorwinterde muzikanten zijn. Een erg aangename kennismaking dus met Brutal Hand. Per uitzondering mag een cliché titel als het afsluitende "Metal rules" nog eens het achterblijvende gevoel omschrijven...

Somewhere in the beginning of this century they started out under the Minds Eye moniker, which actually was a cover band specialized in cover songs of prog oriented bands like Dream Theater or Rush. A few years later they changed their name to Brutal Hand and they started on writing their own material. Today they already are up to full cd number three (the first two were self released). This new album is actually my introduction to these Americans and after the discovery of the above the first listen was surprising. There's quite some technique in the band, but musically this sounds more US metal than expected. With a genuine progressive touch to it, in the vein of the old Queensrÿche or Savatage. The powerful riffs of Ed Herrera and the excellent vocal work of Freddy Ferrell make sure this is far above average, you really hear these are experienced, talented musicians. A very pleasant acquaintance with Brutal Hand indeed. A stereotypical album closure that's called "Metal rules" is once more the perfect description for the overall feeling...
