Hell Spawn

Een band met in feite één lid? Jazeker, het bestaat. Worwyk is het bewijs dat je ook op die manier kwaliteit kan leveren. Thomas Vitacco maakt al ongeveer twintig jaar muziek met zijn geesteskind, recent riep hij de hulp in van een zanger. "Malignant" is ondertussen de achtste full-cd van deze studio-band. Vitacco schrijft alle muziek zelf en neemt de instrumenten ter hand, maar doet ook de mixing, mastering, artwork en dergelijke. Dat hij alle instrumenten de baas kan, etaleert hij regelmatig. Nieuwe zanger Jason Russo (Herod, Darkling) is ook van heel wat markten thuising). De cd opent met een welgemikte schreeuw, waarschijnlijk om direct de aandacht te trekken, maar daarna zakt het tempo. Vocaal zitten er dus enkele leuke dingen tussen, Russo haalt af en toe scherp uit, maar ik heb de indruk dat zijn niveau niet constant is, ondanks de moeite die hij doet. Het ritme wisselt frequent, de dubbele basdrum zorgt er regelmatig voor dat er een tandje wordt bijgestoken. Het soleerwerk mag er zoals gezegd ook wel zijn. Dit is heavy metal met heel veel invloeden uit de jaren '80, met als beste nummer de titelsong en het snellere "Selling sickness". Liefhebbers van de old-school kunnen de aanschaf van dit album zeker overwegen!

A heavy-metal band with not more than one member? Yes indeed, it does exist. Worwyk is the proof that you don't need an entire band to produce quality. Thomas Vitacco has been making music this way for about twenty years and just recently a singer joined him. "Malignant" is the eighth full-cd of this studio-band. Vitacco writes all the music by himself, plays all the instruments but does also the mixing, mastering and artwork and so on. He can cope with all instruments and he regularly shows this. New singer Jason Russo (Herod, Darkling) has a lot of skills too. The cd opens with a wellplaced scream, I guess to draw the attention immediately, but the tempo goes down afterwards. When you talk about the vocal part you notice a couple of real nice things, but I do have the impression Russo can't provide a stable high level despite all his efforts. The rhytm changes frequently, and the double bassdrums provide something extra. The guitar solo's are way better than average. This is heavy metal with lots of influences of the eighties, with as best songs the title track and the faster "Selling sickness". Old-school lovers, go for this album!
