What Excites You

De dekselse jaren '80 - toen pc, internet en community sites als MySpace helemaal nog geen deel uitmaakten van ons dagelijks leven - verborgen veel muzikale schatten voor de grote massa. Iedere fanatieke metalfan kan vast een voorbeeld bedenken, concreet wil ik het hier over "Target:earth" van het Amerikaanse Screamer hebben. Een uitstekende, aan te bevelen US metal plaat uit 1988 die een naar (oude) Queensrÿche, Crimson Glory refererend geluid liet horen (in 2006 werd dat album trouwens heruitgegeven, het is zodoende niet onvindbaar voor eventuele geïnteresseerden). We moeten het misschien weer op de grunge steken, maar vreemd genoeg is het de jaren nadien nooit tot een opvolger gekomen. Tot nu althans, want hier is "What excites you"! Om maar meteen met de deur in huis te vallen: het is niet het logische vervolg geworden. Het progressieve US metal geluid heeft plaats gemaakt voor een melodieuzere, rechtlijniger metalvorm. Net zoals de Geoff Tate, Jon Arch achtige-vocalen van Bill Carter maar sporadisch meer te horen zijn. De brave man zingt nu voornamelijk in lagere toonaarden, wat toch even wennen is. Gebleven zijn wel de traditionele eighties elementen en dat maakt dat deze Screamer wel eens doet denken aan de oude Priest (die voor "Painkiller") of The Scorpions in hun "Blackout", "Love at first sting" dagen. Een andere wending, maar beter dit dan na 20 jaar inspiratieloos met een flauw afkooksel af te komen! Those darn eighties, when pc, internet and community sites like MySpace weren't part of our daily life, kept some real musical treasures hidden to the greater public. Every metal fanatic can likely give an example, I'm in this case actually referring to "Target:earth" from the American Screamer. An excellent, highly recommendable US metal album from 1988, who had a sound referring to (early) Queensrÿche, Crimson Glory (the album had a re-release in 2006, it isn't totally unfindable for those interested). Maybe we must blame grunge again, but strangely enough there wasn't a follow up the next few years. Until now, because here's "What excites you"! To instantly set things straight: it hasn't become a logical successor. The progressive US metal sound has transformed to a more melodic, straight forward metal form. Just like the Geoff Tate, Jon Arch like vocals from Bill Carter are only occasionally heard. The good man sings in a lower key now, a matter of getting used to. What hasn't changed is the traditional eighties vibe and that makes that this Screamer album makes you think of old Priest (before "Painkiller") or The Scorpions in their "Blackout", "Love at first sting" days. A different twist, but rather this kind of evolution than delivering an uninspired replica after 20 years of absence!
