In het begin van dit millennium maakte het Engelse Shadowkeep indruk met hun debuut "Corruption within" en diens opvolger "A Chaos theory" (2002). Up tempo, progressief riffwerk en weergaloze zang zorgden daarvoor. Die zang kwam trouwens van een landgenoot, Rogue Marechel, maar helaas verliet ie de band na die twee albums (om niets meer van de beste man te horen). In Ronnie Stixx (Divine Ruins) werd een waardige opvolger gevonden, maar die verkoos James Rivera op te volgen bij Vicious Rumours. Weer op zoek naar een vocalist dus tot Richie Wicks (ex-Angel Witch, ex-Tygers Of Pan Tang) de job op zich nam. Tel daar nog een nieuwe bassist en een nieuw label bij en je bent al snel 6 jaar verder. Muzikaal sluit deze nieuwe plaat wel naadloos aan bij de klasse van zijn voorgangers, dankzij voornaamste songschrijvers annex getalenteerd gitaarduo Nicki Robson en Chris Allen. "The hourglass effect" is stevig en technisch, zonder overdreven symfonische tierlantijntjes en toch opgebouwd rond niet alledaagse songstructuren. Een heel smakelijke melange van de oude Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, Lethal en Agent Steel. Prog metal zoals toen we dat zo nog niet noemden en zoals we die vandaag de dag niet veel meer horen! Dankzij de gevarieerde zang van een imponerende Richie Wicks zou dit zelfs wel een stuk toegankelijker kunnen zijn dan zijn voorgangers. Een aantal nummers maken enorme indruk ("Shadow keep", "Riot on earth", "As the hourglass falls"), maar door die te noemen doe ik misschien afbreuk aan het totaalbeeld. En dat mag niet, want zo naar het einde van het jaar toe is dit absoluut jaarlijstjes materiaal!

English band Shadowkeep made quite an impression in the beginning of this millenium, first with their debut “Corruption within”, later with its follow up “A Chaos theory” (2002). Up tempo, progressive riffing and fenomenal vocals made sure of that. Those vocals came from a fellow countryman by the way, Rogue Marechel, but unfortunately he left the band after those two albums (no more to be heard of). In Ronnie Stixx (Divine Ruins) a worthy replacement was found, but he choose to fill in for James Rivera who left Vicious Rumours. So again on the look out for a new vocalist until Richie Wicks (ex Angel Witch, ex Tygers Of Pan Tang) took the job. Add up the recruitment of a new bass player, a new label and you’re soon 6 years later. Musically the new album contains the same high quality as its predecessors, thanks to the main songwriters and talented guitar duo Nicki Robson and Chris Allen. “The hourglass effect” is heavy and technical, without any overdone symphonic elements while undoubtely avoiding plain, common songstructures. A very tasteful mix of the old Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, Lethal and Agent Steel. Prog metal like in the days we didn’t call it that way and as we don’t hear that much nowadays! Thanks to the variable vocals of an imposing Richie Wicks this could be even more or easier accesible than the previous records. A few songs make an enormous impression (“Shadow keep”, “Riot on earth”, “As the hourglass falls”), but by naming them it may be detrimental to the whole. And that’s not my intension, because so close to the end of 2008 this is definitely a suggestion for the album of the year list!
